đŸ”„ DENTURE RELINES

While a new denture initially fits securely, your gum tissues and underlying bone change over time. This natural process leads to a **looser fit** and increased movement, which can cause discomfort and poor function. Having your denture professionally **relined every one to two years** is vital to keep the appliance secure, comfortable, and functional.

Types of Denture Relines

1. Hard Denture Reline (Permanent)

All full dentures typically require a **hard reline every two years**. Dr. Ghia, DDS, MAGD, removes a thin layer of the denture's interior and takes a **putty-like impression** directly in your mouth. The denture is then sent to the lab where the new impression material is replaced with **hard, new acrylic**. This process perfectly adjusts the denture to the current shape of your gum tissue, ensuring maximum contact and stability.

2. Soft Denture Reline

Patients experiencing chronically **tender gums or sore spots** may struggle with standard hard acrylic. Dr. Ghia may recommend a soft reline, which uses a material that stays **pliable and cushiony** for one to two years before needing replacement. This material significantly reduces the likelihood of developing sore spots. Patients with these issues may also consider **implant-retained dentures** as a permanent solution.

3. Temporary Relines (Medicated)

If dentures have not been serviced in a long time, the patient’s gums may be **red, swollen, or misshapen**. Taking an accurate impression for a permanent reline in this state is difficult and could perpetuate the problem.

A temporary, or **palliative (medicated) reline** material is applied to allow the inflammation to subside. This soft, pliable reline tightens the fit while the gums return to a more normal state (usually a few weeks). Once the gums are healed, the patient is ready for a new denture or a definitive hard reline.
