This non-surgical treatment is the crucial initial step for managing periodontal disease , aiming to remove the bacteria and hardened deposits that cause gum inflammation.
Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) is commonly recommended for cases ranging from Gingivitis to Moderate/Severe Periodontal Disease . This intensive cleaning targets the *etiologic agents* (dental plaque and hard calculus) that have accumulated below the gum line where normal brushing cannot reach, causing gum inflammation and pocket formation.
What it is: The process of meticulously removing calculus (tartar) and plaque attached to the tooth surfaces, especially below the gum line along the root.
Performed using a special ultrasonic scaling tool , often including an irrigation process to deliver antimicrobial agents deep below the gums to reduce bacteria.
What it is: The removal of rough, infected cementum and surface dentin embedded with toxins and tartar.
The goal is to smooth the root surface , promoting healing and preventing bacteria from easily recolonizing in the future.
Depending on the severity, local anesthesia may be used during the procedure. Additionally, antibiotic fibers may be placed directly into deep periodontal pockets after scaling and planing to control infection and encourage normal healing.
Note: When deep pockets persist (over 3mm) and cannot be kept clean by the patient or through SRP, surgical intervention may be necessary to restore long-term periodontal health.
